ORCHESTRATION

I Have a Dream is an opening into the world of Mearra. This orchestration is slow tempo to express the mood of the early morning, before the dawn. For the theatrical stage version, it is delivered by a traveling minstrel in bardic prose with a single spotlight on the stage. There is a hint of a dancing woman seen around the minstrel, whose dress hem touches the spotlight as mist upon water.

Open Sea shows the feeling of adventure as Aed travels the world of Mearra making maps of each island he discovers. Due to the rare tidal events of the planet, it takes an expert sailor to traverse the open seas and Aed is one of the most masterful sea captains and cartographers known. His maps are sought after, as there are island chains only seen by him.

Dream Lovers is the tale of our main characters Aed and Kleito. Beginning with Aed’s tale of adventure and followed by Kleito’s tale of island life. The female vocal on this orchestration is sung by Marya Stark, with Cohen performing Aed’s parts. This is a key song in the overview theme of the love story central to the musical. Aed sings from the bow of his ship, while Kleito sings from her cliff home edge.

How Can It Be is a light hearted song sang in rounds by each of the main characters, expressiing the love triangle of the story. This orchestration has only one voice to show the melody that will be sung by Kleito, Tane and Aed in the production. It will feature choreographed dancing by a troupe of three to five dancers, and theatrical vignettes showing each of the characters trade. Tane mending nets and preparing the boat, Kleito at the cove of sunrise, and Aed moving from captains quarters to the helm of his ship with a maps.

Quest to feature a Shinobue flute solo melody. This orchestration is a short version. The full composition is followed by a Taiko troupe that sets the melody upon a rising tidal force. The motif is repeated until we arrive at the coming storm.

Storm into Descent is the apex of change in the musical. The storm is the catalyst that brings the dream lovers together. In this saga of loss and love, each character must let go of what they treasure most, only to find the sea brings gifts beyond their wildest dreams. Following the Storm and Descent orchestrations, we arrive at the final melodies and resolutions of the story. Those motifs lead us to the final moment when Kleito and Aed recognize each other for the first time.

Drifting is the pre-dawn moment where nothing is known by any of the characters. It is like a eclipse moment. There is a pause in the morning air, the sea is still and Kleito scans the horizon for any signs of Tane. To be sung by the female lead (Kleito) - this version is a reference mix of the melody sung by Cohen.

Starcross is a finale celebration of love. It has sweeping melodies and lyrics yet to be recorded. This mix is for reference of melodic ideas that dance on the simple chordal movement of the motif. This is when our dream lovers are united and recognize each other by each others eyes. It is a song of declaration of love discovered, in the most unsuspected way. A dream come true:)

ÁED:

私はずっと岸から遠く離れてさまよってきた

水平線はもっと求めている

あなたは私に千の世界が描かれた指輪を見せてくれた

私には同じものが一つだけある、風が私にキスをしたのに

LA HA YEAH / LA HE

LA HA YEAH / LA HE

KLEITO:

私は男、子供、そしてもっと多くの人たちと岸辺に住んでいます

それでも毎晩、あなたの心は私に誓われていると夢に見る

風に吹かれたこの空にあなたの目だけを

この切ない夜を星のように燃やす

LA HA YEAH / LA HE

LA HA YEAH / LA HE

ÁED:

私はずっと岸から遠く離れてさまよってきた

水平線はもっと求めている

ÁED & KLEITO:

それでも毎晩、あなたの心は誓いを立てられていると夢に見る

貝殻の中の真珠、そしてこの嵐の中の海面、この地平線はもっとを求めて

いる

ÁED:

All of my days I have wandered far from shore

The face of the sea, this horizon begs for more

You show me the ring with a thousand worlds upon it

I have one just the same, though the wind has kissed me for it

La Ha yeah  / La He

La Ha yeah  / La He

KLEITO:

I live by the shore with a man, a child and more

Yet each night I dream that to me your heart is sworn

With only your eyes in this wind swept sky

To burn as the stars through this harrowing night

La Ha yeah  / La He

La Ha yeah  / La He

ÁED:

All of my days I have wandered far from shore

Face of the sea, this horizon begs for more

ÁED & KLEITO:

Yet each night I dream that to me, your heart is sworn

The pearl in the shelL and light in this storm

HOW CAN IT BE

ÁED / KLEITO / TANE (sang in rounds)

How, how can it be

You’re in love with someone

And someone’s in love with me

How, how can it be

You’re in love with someone

And someone’s in love with me

Someday you may

see me as I am

I will fly till

The sea becomes the land

And your rolling waves go on

Oh go on, don’t wait for me! (aside)

I HAVE A DREAM

AED:

I have a dream and it starts with you

I have a dream and it starts with blue Eyes

like fire diamond rings

I have a dream

I have a dream and it starts with you

I have a dream and it fills the night sky

Rise like stories through

I have a dream

I have a dream and it starts with you

I have a dream and it starts with blue Eyes

like fire diamond rings

I have a dream

And it starts with you

DRIFTING

KLEITO

Though your eyes play so far from me

Your ship of dreams has fallen in the sea

Darlin you're drifting

You’re drifting

Though you sail face towards the sun

Your heart of gold it shines on everyone

Darlin you're drifting

You’re drifting

Though the moons carve this pearl from stone

In this night I move for you alone

My love I'm coming home

I'm coming home

I’m coming home

My love

Kleito - Concept Art by McKensie Boyle

Stage Design for Mearra after 1st song “I Have a Dream” - Concept Art by McKensie Boyle

The musical begins with a ray of light in water. The ray becomes a ball of light. Then back to a ray and makes a slight glass bell sound as it moves.

Initially there is only the water and the light playing across an unlimited space. IUt seems that there is only water and light and in a sense, the void.

Then a twinkle of small light in distance. Then another. At first, they appear as stars in the cloudy night sky, obscured and then re-appearing. From few twinkles, to many. until there is a vast amount of small lights that twinkle as the the ray moves through the water.

In the soft light of the many ‘stars’ we see hints of villages, building structures, roads, and pyramids, 「a ref to yonaguni island」They appear as mist, somewhat translucent and soft. Ghosts. For a moment, it appears that there are creatures or persons moving through the streets and roads of the villages. Then they are gone and the village roads are empty. The ball/ray of light is curious and the closer it gets to the villages, the less it can see. It is being watched. It feels this way at least.

For a time, the ray of light moves across the floor of the sea, illuminating many colored fish, coral, jellyfish, and even octopus. The floor of the sea is alive with many creatures and in the distance, we see in shadow a vast whale creature and squid with pods of dolphins swimming in circles and curves.『editor note - the creatures are not exact dolphins or octopus, they are different slightly, having extra fins, more legs etc as it is a referral to Earth creatures, yet Mearra is not Earth 』

STORY

On an oceanic planet with two binary moons, a pearl diver named Kleito lives on an island with her daughter Minowin. Every day, Kleito collects pearls and stores her treasures in hidden rooms of her cliffside home. Every night, she dreams of a man whose eyes compel her with knowing, yet his face and body continually change form. She keeps these dreams secret from her lover Tane, a local fisherman with secrets of his own. At sea, Captain Áed travels by sun, stars, and moons through unknown waters, mapping the world of Mearra. Each night, he dreams of an ever-changing woman, yet her eyes remain the same.

One day, an unprecedented storm hits, sweeping the fisherman out to sea. Lightning strikes Aed's ship and sinks it. He falls into the churning depths. When the storm passes, Kleito stands at shore, scanning the waterfront, waiting for Tane to return. Instead, she sees a strange man floating in the waters. She rescues him, not recognizing Áed, her dream lover, as his eyes are closed as he is unconscious. As Kleito works to save this stranger's life, she wonders, who is he? And where is Tane?

In this saga of loss and love, each character must let go of what they treasure most, only to find the sea brings gifts beyond their wildest dreams.
